Designing wedding cards - tips and trends

Finding a partner and wanting to spend the rest of your life with them is a great happiness. Once you have decided to tie the knot, you want the most beautiful day of your life to be something very special. Now extensive preparations have to be made - the date of the wedding ceremony, the wedding dress and suit, the number of guests, the location, music, food, the course of the event, accommodation and much more have to be included in the organisation. Once the date and location have been decided, you can start sending out your individual wedding cards to the desired guests. No matter whether you are planning a small celebration with your closest family or a big party with all your friends and acquaintances - the earlier you inform your loved ones, the better!

Create a personal wedding card for your guests

With a wedding card you don't just tell your family, friends or acquaintances the time and place of the wedding, you can also cheer their anticipation for the day with a special design. Since every couple is very individual, there is no one wedding card that everyone likes and feels conveys the right message. That is why there is an abundance of different prefabricated wedding cards, which come in a wide variety of colours and are printed with designs, as well as the option of designing wedding cards yourself. The latter offers the great advantage of letting you live out your individuality, realising your own style and sending exactly the invitation that represents you. Whether funny and playful, simple and elegant, exciting with contrasts or already with a motto - designing a wedding card is not only fun but also realises you as a couple. Since there are endless possibilities, some current wedding card trends may help you decide on a design option.

Wedding invitation design: these trends are very popular

Shape and material of the wedding card

Before the wedding invitation is even designed and inscribed, the shape and material of the card should basically be determined. In addition to the classic square card in portrait or landscape format, round shapes are now in vogue. These can be wedding cards with rounded corners or with a bow on one side, reminiscent of a wedding arch. The invitation can also be folded out, so you can create a beautiful cover as well as clearly present a saying and/or the dates on the inside pages. In addition to the shapes, you can choose from a wide variety of materials. There are different types of paper, which can also be refined. For example, 350 gsm photo paper is recommended for excellent colour reproduction. A more refined touch can be achieved with 400 gsm premium paper. Both types of paper can be printed in matt or gloss. If you want to personalise the wedding invitations on your own printer, we recommend 350 gsm offset paper. Alternatively, couples for whom environmentally conscious paper is important can choose white recycled paper with a grammage of 300 gsm, for example, which has even been certified with the Blue Angel.

Design proposals - popular wedding card trends

Once you've been able to decide on a paper type, size and shape, now it's time for the basic wedding card design. There are endless possibilities to choose from.

If you have chosen a wedding in nature or near a forest, you can use botanical style cards. Whether a dense forest of leaves or line art motifs, that is, fine and delicate lines that represent, for example, a flower - here you can realize yourself. Especially line art motifs belong to the wedding card trends of 2023, because they look very minimalistic and at the same time extremely modern. So nature lovers can design their wedding cards in a soft olive green, for example, and also print them on recycled paper.

Besides the botanical style, personalized photo cards continue to be popular. This way you can show your guests at first glance who is going to tie the knot, and also share a special moment of your life with them. Is there a beautiful vacation photo, a picture of the place where you decided to get married or even just a snapshot of you laughing? With a photo or even a photo collage you make your wedding card very personal.

Another trend for wedding card design for 2023 but also in general is the gold look. This can be both delicate and noble lines or font, but it can also be more flashy to pompous. Gold on your wedding cards will be glamorous and luxurious in any case!

Wedding invitations in a minimalist style can be combined with gold but are simpler, creating a maximum effect despite the discreet design. Use simple details, a clear font without embellishments and either a statement colour or a subtle colour gradient. For the paper type, a matt type and plain white envelopes are suitable.

For a completely stylish wedding card, use dark colours in combination with gold lettering in elegantly shaped letters. You can also choose other details, such as flowers, geometric shapes like hexagons or high-quality papers like linen or mother-of-pearl. Just looking at your self-designed wedding card will be a real highlight and give you an impressive idea of how your wedding itself will be.

Quite the opposite of the stylishly designed wedding card are those that are designed with delicate watercolours. Here you can let the colours do the talking, regardless of whether you use brush or watercolour. Watercolour wedding cards are playful yet stylish and lighten up the atmosphere. Add some gold lettering for a touch of class and the wedding card is complete!

Clear as glass, brilliant and of high quality are without question wedding cards made of acrylic glass. They are modern, timeless and extremely elegant. You can design and personalise your own acrylic invitations in no time at all. Your message is printed on a transparent acrylic plate, which can then either be completed with paper of your choice or sent in an envelope. Whatever you choose, your acrylic invitation is sure to have a special place with your guests long after the wedding.

Alternative: Wedding cards according to theme

Of course, another option is to adapt the design of the wedding invitation to the theme of your event. What kind of wedding do you want? For a beach wedding, sandy tones are suitable; you could also add a holiday picture from the coast. Likewise, anchor motifs are recommended for weddings near coasts or the sea, whereby the symbolism of the anchor can also be used straight away. Are you planning to travel after your special day? Then a compass or part of the world map is ideal for wedding card design. If the celebration is to take place at home or in the garden with lots of children, you can also use playfully designed wedding invitations. Bright colours are ideal here.
